Review of Ed Wood (1994) by Garrett C — 06 Nov 2011
An absolutely genius bio-pic about a man who didn't have such genius. The film's black and white is perfect and evokes the style of the 1950's well. The acting by Johnny Depp was frequently hilarious, his little quirks and mannerisms remind me of his performance in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Martin Landau's performance as Bela Lugosi was great and his accent sounded absolutely impeccable. The film never insults Wood, but is more of a love letter to his cringe-inducing Z pictures. He is never shown as being stupid, but optimistic and with a yearning to just make great films such as his idol Orson Welles.
It's a treat for fans of cinema, but I'm not sure how well it would work for a casual viewer.
