Review of Ebola Syndrome (1996) by Andrew S — 29 Jun 2008
Anthony Wong (best known as the villain from John Woo's "Hard Boiled") bests what I'd thought was his most insane performance ("Bunman", aka "The Untold Story") as Kai, possibly the most psychotic character in film history. Check it out: Kai has sex with his boss's wife and then murders them both right in front of their young daughter. He hides out in Africa, where he works as a cook in a restaurant. While accompanying his new boss on a trip to purchase cheap meat, Kai rapes a topless African villager infected with the Ebola virus. Turns out, one in every million infected actually lives to become a walking Ebola host, spitting blood and having sex and even sneezing on people to get them sick. He rapes his new boss's wife and sucks out her eyeball before turning them both into infected hamburger meat at the restaurant. And that's all before he returns to his home land to start infecting prostitutes and anyone who might piss him off.
This movie is freaky, gross, violent, gory, over-the-top Hong Kong cinema. A guy on fire gets hit by a speeding car! You have to see this to truly believe it.
