Review of Eat Pray Love (2010) by Houston H — 15 Apr 2013
I was hesitant to watch this movie. I watched the movie then read the book (which I typically read books first). I liked that she was dealing with a real life crisis and felt that she couldn't find love and happiness in her every day life.
It is a spiritual transformation in that she had to find meaning in life by traveling to other countries because she was lacking the experience in America. It's nice to see the actual places in the movie, the only thing it lacked that was shown in the book was the context of these cultures.
They started to develop the ideas in Italy but overall only very basic ideas that were in the book were shown in the movie. I think the screen writers were scared to include the philosophies that are in the book that Liz learned from these cultures because they are foreign and hard to explain in a movie context.
For an American audience I think they can relate but there was a loss of meaning that is only in the book. Overall it was pretty good and the acting I thought was good.
