Review of Easy A (2010) by Gary N — 11 Jun 2012
Surprisingly grown-up High School teen comedy. Emma Stone produces a stunning performance- full of sharp wit, compassion and foolhardy empathy.
I can't remember the last time I saw a film confound my expectations; visually it seemed ten a penny, but then there is no need for Spielberg-esque cinematic composition. The writer and director, Will Gluck, needs a pat on the back. The characterisations, script and occasional stereotype are nicely played out.
Stone imbues her virginal character with stubborn witty integrity in the face of the growing rumour mongering slut status she initially tries to reject and deny- then embraces. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!
This makes for a truly great date movie too- and doesn't follow the usual formula: "boy meets girl- they hate each other- love each other- split over a silly misunderstanding then one chases the other to stop them catching the train/plane" crap.
