Review of Easy A (2010) by Matt W — 23 Jun 2012
From the poster, you would probably instantly think that this movie would be the same old rubbish , where a girl meets a guy, and they all live happily every after, and there will be no character development, and it probably won't be funny either. This movie goes back to another film, known as Mean Girls, which looks like some rubbish for girls only, but actually is really funny. This movie is better than Mean Girls, this is a funny, enjoyable movie, and it is such an easy film to watch, it is just well-written, well-acted, and is just handled well as a whole, because if this movie was done wrong, then it would just become another forgettable mess of a film.
The cast here almost seemed to be perfect for each role, and I was almost left wondering how they had got so many good actors and actresses for the film, it was crazy. Starting with Emma Stone, she was made for this role, and she actually gives a really good performance, and you feel for her, every step down she takes into this web of lies, and unfortunate events- shhe makes it feel so real, all the crazy events that happen around her. Also other stand-outs were Amanda Bynes who acts as the anti-everything Christian, who was one of my favourite characters, as she actually played something different to what she would normally play, and it actually showed to me that she does have some range in her acting abilities, and it payed off. Others were Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson, who are really charming and funny as the quirky parents, and they had such presence on the screen which was really funny to se. Also Lisa Kudrow was in this movie, which is always a bonus for me, to see her in a movie.
The script was very well written, and it made the film almost seem like it was from the 80s, it had this Ferris Bueller feel to it, maybe becuase that movie is actually referenced in the movie a few times. This movie is almost created as a love letter to those particular movies, and it just had this nostalgic, warm feel to it, that just drew me into the film. And this film really is funny, and some could find it quite quotable- I'm not very good at quoting things though, but it does have some funny one-liners here.
There are definite problems with the movie though, as I do find that Lisa Kudrow's character was under used, and the problme that she has with Thomas Haden Church could have been brought up a bit more throughout the film, as then this could have relfected a bit more on Olive, Emma Stone's character in the end. But I think the main problme this film has is maybe that it is too short, but more the fact that the ending almost feels like it is racing to the end, and although I don't want it to drag, I think tht they could have a little more time on how the characters ended up, so that we could just feel a little bit more, especially with Kudrow and Haden Church, as it is never really touched on that much, or what is clear on what happened to their characters in the end which I found to be a bit frustrating.
The movie as a whole is really funny, enjoyable, and quite quirky. it may have the same kind of generic ending, and you know how it is going to end, but not from the beginning, as the movie gives a few different exits, but you start to figure it out in the end. This is agreat comedy, and good rom-com, a charming and funny central character, and an interesting and different story, to the normal.
