Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by David S — 13 Sep 2010
People and critics alike really enjoy the older and more nuanced Cronenberg style. I am one of the few who do not. I grew up with this man directing such minor classics as SCANNERS and VIDEODROME and outright classics like THE FLY and NAKED LUNCH.
This new Cronenberg is old and weathered but also seemingly less creative. His dark and brooding overall style along with signature moments of explicit violence and sex are still there and this is why people are drawn in, but I've seen so much better not just from the man himself but from others in the same areas that he's recently tread with this one (LITTLE ODESSA covers Russian mafia better) and SPIDER (check out CLEAN, SHAVEN instead) and A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (the obvious choice is Peckinpah's STRAW DOGS).
I don't know...maybe I'm getting more jaded as I age but I'm fairly certain that Cronenberg has settled into mainstream movie making just fine enough to dull most senses...how he's fooling the critics as well has me scratching my head.
