Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Shane M — 05 Jan 2012
I like Cronenberg, although I can never fathom spoiling myself on his films and watching them repeatedly or even owning a copy of one. I didn't like the feeling I got after watching A History of Violence, but this movie made me feel more apart of what was going on, instead of some onlooker being shocked by various scenes of graphic violence and sex.
And yes, this movie has that, but it just feels different. This is one of the few films I've seen where I actually ended up investing most of my interest into something and then the movie takes a completely different turn, leaving my ponderings most unfulfilled.
That was more my fault though and the ending was probably the right way to go, I just got the feeling I spent over an hour being misled. Either way, this is a good movie. All actors work so well within the film, Vincent Cassel continues to surprise me as a truly sinister character with so much talent.
I'd say that this is a movie worth watching once, but I won't invest any more of my time into it apart from in the theater.
