Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Tyler M — 31 Mar 2012
Much better than the last Cronenberg/Mortensen project.
A bleak narrative lived out on screen with outstanding performances from Naomi Watts, Viggo Mortensen, and Armin Mueller-Stahl.
Mortensen deserves his Oscar nomination, and deserves to win... As I write this, the Oscars haven't aired yet... If he wins it's well earned, if he loses it's a shame.
It's like History of Violence meets The Departed meets The Godfather. The Russian Mafia working to keep family secrets from falling into the wrong hands and stopping at nothing to silence the voices that could kill them.
My only problem with this film is that it comes to a somewhat unsatisfying and somewhat predictable end... Did Cronenberg want to leave it open for a sequel, or did he just want the audience to finish the story in their own minds? Maybe that's a question more for writer Steven Knight.
Either way, passing on this film would be a big mistake.
