Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Robert D — 17 Jun 2012
Given the subject matter and the intensity of the violence in Eastern Promises, it's surprising that David Cronenberg would use such a patient, classical approach to the storytelling. There are very few quick cuts, giving the action within the picture time and space to speak for itself.
It works in his favor, not only better highlighting (and by no means glorifying) the few times that graphic violence is shown, but also boosting the well-tempered performances by the entire cast.
