Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Cole B — 29 Aug 2012
I have always been afraid of watching a David Cronenberg movie, and for that reason this is the only one I've seen in its entirety. I acknowledge his exceptional skills at creating some of the greatest psychological films in history, but it just seems to be a little too much for my tastes.
That being said, I felt that Eastern Promises was a fairly enjoyable film and I liked the dark, edgy stylishness evoked from every scene. Viggo Mortensen's performance is mesmerizing and creates the human element required by a film like this.
The story itself failed to capture my attention, and I felt like the majority of the scenes were somewhat pointless. Still, it's a very memorable film, and the fight in the sauna is just as notorious as I expected it to be.
Eastern Promises is an attack on all your senses, and although I thought it was pretty good, I will never EVER see it again.
