Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Scott W — 18 Jul 2013
Viggo Mortensen is a badass. Armin Mueller-Stahl is a badass. Russian mobsters frighten me. All these pieces are well put together for a tightly wound gangster story loaded with atmosphere. I'm also a HUGE fan of Naomi Watts, though she is barely used here.
While I've never been a Cronenberg fan, here he seems to let his strengths shine and refrains from letting his odd fetishes dominate the film as he sometimes does. Finally, the score is a beautiful, haunting orchestral piece with a little Russian & Hebrew flair.
Good movie.
