Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Martin S — 20 Jan 2014
Maybe it's a little too graphic for some to stomach, but it's nothing bad. Everyone who dies gets their throat slit. At times, Eastern Promises sets out to be a great mobster flick, but it can't help but feel like it's copying a huge part of Goodfellas, The Godfather, Scarface, etc.
This could have been in the making of a great gangster flick, but it unfortunately never soars. The acting is probably the best part of this. Viggo Mortensen pretty much steals the show and Naomi Watts isn't bad herself.
However, it's let down by some very jarring tonal shifts. It didn't know whether it wanted to be a psychological film or a mobster one. However, watching Mortensen chew the scenery up is enough to warrant a 6/10.
It's nothing great, but it's at least nothing terrible.
