Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Yo-Yo A — 19 Aug 2010
A dark, deceitful & violent thriller. A midwife (Naomi Watts) dwells into the London/Eastern-European criminal underworld, when reading the diary of a girl who had died whilst giving birth to her child.
By digging deeper to find out the girl's past with the aid of her aunt & uncle, she creates several enemies. By bringing unwanted attention to a Russian crime-boss, she puts her life under great risk.
The crime-boss in question has trouble of keeping his reckless son from causing trouble. He is aided by his 'driver' (Viggo Mortensen). Mortensen gives a great performance by saying not a lot and barely raising his voice, yet still portraying a quiet & reserved anger.
The script allowed solid acting without allowing any needless waffling. There was a consistent yet tense pace to the film which shifted only when the stakes rose. Credit given to the director by not dwelling on the gruesome scenes.
These an impressive fighting scene in the film which sums up the film as a whole, by being both brutal yet compelling. Not to every body's taste but definitely to mine.
