Review of Eastern Promises (2007) by Tom T — 06 Oct 2010
The characters within the story are very well written but the story itself isn't so great. Eastern Promises is a modern day gangster film set in London based around the Russian Mafia. The plot kicks off when a Russian prostitute is killed.
When the doctors get her to the hospital they find out that she is pregnant and manage to save the child. Along with the prostitutes effects is a diary which one of the nurses (Naomi Watts) picks up. Due to the diary being written in Russian she attempts to have it translated, which ends up leading her into the criminal underworld of the Russian Mafia.
However an undercover Russian cop manages to infiltrate the mafia and helps Watt's character bring the head of the mafia family down. Eastern Promises may sound really good but you'll probably be disappointed at the finished outcome.
The story isn't as cast iron as it should be, resulting in all the characterization going to somewhat of a waste. That's the film's only flaw; its story. But Eastern Promises is still a satisfactorily good film, but its not good enough to earn a place in my DVD collection.
