Review of East/West (1999) by Curry J — 22 Mar 2009
I suppose it was very good; a great story, and delicately filmed. I had trouble reconciling the two halves of the film with each other though; not from a turn of events sort of perspective, but simply as a viewer.
The beginning was a slow build, and I couldn't feel the tension. I couldn't feel the urgency that I'm sure must have been there in the real story. It just seemed unrepresented on film. Once I got to the second half, I finally got swept up in the urgency - only to have the scenes then cut to these short clips of what was happening over the years.
(After having been slowly dragged through what seemed like an eternity.) Probably just a personal tack; maybe I was expecting something different. All in all, a touching story and worth a look.
