Review of East of Eden (1955) by Matt G — 24 Aug 2008
A great melodrama. Strong characters. Strives to show how our efforts to hide from our own flaws catch up to hurt us. Also demonstrates the use of concepts like "good vs. evil" as a means to manipulate and suppress our own and each others' instincts.
The only flaw was Dean's character. Well-played, but a bit of an "idiot plot" in that it's hard to imagine that his father couldn't see how his behavior was creating the monster that he saw his son to be.
My other regret is that I was unable (so far) to view it in its original Cinemascope aspect ratio. A very good film.
