Review of East of Eden (1955) by Bryan T — 06 Dec 2008
By far one of the most painful movies I have ever seen. It has so much going on and with such ambition that it just kind of knocks you over. Not without its flaws (the ending, most pointedly) but overall this is honestly one of the most engrossing family dramas ever put to screen.
It drags the viewer all over the place and with little to no catharsis. It's funny, beautiful, scenic, dark, intense and everything in between. Blew me away. I can safely tell you I won't be able to get it out of my head for the next two or three days.
The birthday party scene left my gut cold.
