Review of East of Eden (1955) by Mikael K — 25 Dec 2008
As a James Dean fan, I had to finally see his debut film. They don't make them like they used to. Heck, they didn't make very many like this even in those days! Dean never ceases to amaze me as an actor.
He wasn't afraid of anything. He could explore some of the most painful places ever seen on film, and always bring something extra to the table in doing so. He left more of a mark with just three films than most actors have left in a span of fifty years.
Beyond Dean, though, this is a fairly emotionally complex tale that dared to go to some considerably dark and unconventional places. I'd say the film is pretty unpredictable, which I imagine owes a lot to the book upon which it was based.
I'd strongly recommend this to James Dean fans. And if you aren't a James Dean fan, you probably just haven't seen any of his films. Why not start with his first?
