Review of East of Eden (1955) by Jeffrey P — 24 Jun 2009
Sprawling, theatrical and somewhat overwrought, "Eden"'s style doesn't date well -- Dean's torment gets to be a bit much at times. The story of two competitive brothers at the dawn of World War I is still engrossing and intense, though I 'm curious to see how Steinbeck ends the novel.
The cast is fine, with Massey, Harris and Ives as standouts.
