Review of East of Eden (1955) by Garrett O — 24 Oct 2009
A story of overwhelming passion. Dean makes you feel the ache of unrequited love and Julie Harris' portrayal of innocent wisdom is incredible. If you have any doubts about James Dean as a great actor watch the movie and decide for yourself.
Raymond Massey as the object of Cal's (James Dean) love portrays a flawed and decent man who can never give his son the love he needs because he doesn't know how. Abra's (Harris) monologue on loving her own father is beautiful in its simplicity.
Steinbeck's novel is one of his best but the movie is transcendent.
