Review of East Is East (1999) by Kate S — 25 Jan 2008
Jimi Mistry has a killer smile. Now that that's out of the way, this is a great little film that nobody saw. Interesting setting - Manchester during the Seventies - and culture clash with the half-British, half-Pakistani kids trying to balance their mom's working class English culture and their dad's more traditional Muslim culture.
It's one of the few movies that never fails to cheer me up. Everyone's well-cast, several from the stage version. (Warning: Slight change in pace close to the end with a child abuse scene that's definitely hard to watch, for me.
