Studio Ghibli's first 3D movie is more outlier than heretic. In what sense? the characters feel distant and do not convey empathy to the viewer, and the plot feels superficial, the dramatic arc looks implausible.
It's not for playing Devil's Advocate, but a minor SG movie is worth more than any sequel made to sell hamburgers.
