Actually a rather silly movie, full of nonsense and inconsistencies, but quite fun for all that. Note that everyone's initial reaction to the arrival of flying saucers is to shoot at them, before they've actually done anything to attack us.
(Although there is speculation that they've been shooting down our satellites - but these are unmanned satellites, and there's no proof the aliens did it anyway. Still, shoot first and ask questions later seems to have been the order of the day).
