Review of Earth (1999) by Nikki A — 03 Jan 2008
Deepa's films are known to be unhurried and deliberate; giving you time to soak in the feeling she's imparting; putting you almost in a dreamlike state. take the time to enjoy the music and the visuals and allow your mind to wander.
this film is based on an autobiographical novel, making the story more moving. I was moved to audible weeping and felt a pain in my chest after seeing the heinous crimes against other humans that loyalty to a specific religion and the lack of tolerance and hate can cause.
millions of people died when the british rule ended. friends who had lived peacefully and respectfully for centuries turned against one another because they served god differently. beautifully told. many levels of moral and emotional complexity.
