Review of Early Man (2018) by Davidwashere — 16 Feb 2018
This movie is atypical Aardman Animations film. There really isn't anything all that daring other than subverting a trope that if you are familiar with movies you will know what I am talking about. It's a safe movie.
But safe doesn't mean that it is terrible. Far from it! There are plenty of laughs that both kids and parents can enjoy, or really anyone of any age can enjoy if they aren't a sad sack with no funny bones in their body, their trademark Claymation style still looks fantastic and well crafted in an ever growing 3D CGI animation world, with thumbprints and messing with the scale in all (although there are times that the characters are clearly animated on a green screen and keyed in, taking me out of the movie), and some fantastic voice acting all around, especially from Eddie Redmayne as the cheerful lead Dug and Tom Hiddleston as the ridiculous Frenchman bad guy Lord Nooth.
It's not the most original movie in the world, nor will it present something deep with the core story. This movie is basically like a warm blanket. You wrap it around your body and relax in the cozy feeling of warmth around your body.
