Review of Eagle vs Shark (2007) by Kody N — 30 Jul 2008
What I liked: All of the supporting characters in the movie seemed to be funny. I laughed at them a lot more than Lily or Jarrod. I loved the brother sister relationship where it just seemed they loved being around each other and making the other laugh.
I wanted to see more of those 2. Where can I get some AWESOME brand athletic suits? I loved those! What I didn't like: The 2 main characters were sluggish and boring to me. Jarrod especially wasn't funny because he was formulaic.
He acted like a 35 year old Napoleon Dynamite (almost like it was on purpose). The problem with these films (we'll call them the pencil sketch genre because they all seem to have drawings in them) is that the movie only goes as fast as the characters personality.
Eagle Vs. Shark felt like it was a 3 hour movie but it barely pushed 90 minutes. The story is so simple that it could've been summed up in a SNL skit and I liked the family of the characters much more than the characters themselves.
Also, other than a few gags, the movie just wasn't that funny. It relied on you thinking these people were so pathetic that you would think it's funny, but it never is. Also, how many songs are you gonna put in this film and cut short? Every 2 minutes there seemed to be another song and a short montage.
Wow...that's gotta tell you something. Well, forgiving all of the problems I had with it, I'm glad I stayed awake for the whole movie. There was enough there to make me okay with watching it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you need to.
I still want some AWESOME brand athletic suits. My vote: 6. PS>This movie would've been very different if it came before Napoleon Dynamite. A lot of seemed cliche and done before just because of that movie and I think that hurt it in the long run.
