Review of Eagle vs Shark (2007) by Tibor B — 19 Nov 2008
A shameless rip off of Napoleon Dynamite and other US indie "misfit romances". This New Zealand film has a decent pair of leads, Flight of the Conchords Jermaine Clement adding to Napoleon Dynamite's geek chic with added depressive anger.
There are some chuckles to be had, but the vast majority of the film is a parade of exaggeratedly eccentric characters, twee little "Life Aquatic.." style animated interludes and a not particularly sympathetic romance between an awkward girl and a selfish, narcissistic nerd.
Only in the last ten minutes does some genuine emotion start to show, but by then its impossible to take seriously.
