Review of Eagle vs Shark (2007) by Jerome B — 01 Feb 2009
As I have never seen Flight of the Concords television series, so I didnâ??t know what to expect really. Not something I laugh out loud to, but it was amusing most of the time. Like Napoleon Dynamite but on antidepressant.
It sort of looked like a amateur film school, it tells the story of two awkward, socially inept people. Most of the humor is aimed at the families of these two misfits. Part of me thought that Jarrod (Jemaine Clement) was autistic, rather than immature and introverted.
He and his friends are geeky, nerdy computer gamers. I donâ??t know if this was a dig at them or people who work in low paid burger bars such as Lily or in computer gaming shops like Jarrod. His quest is to get back at the number one bully from his school days, this takes him back to the family home with his new girlfriend lily (Loren Horsley).
The character of Jarrod is rather annoying and I didnâ??t find myself remotely liking him. I didnâ??t feel sorry for his lack of social skills, even when we are introduced to his family, which gave the audience some idea why he is the way he is.
All the main characters seem to be in the stages of bereavement, Jarrod and his family are mourning the lost of his elder brother. Half the time, I didnâ??t understand the poor girls attraction to Jarrod.
Who is totally unsophisticated in how he deals with anything he experiences within this narrative. Even in New Zealand, the suburban setting gives the look of a bored, dull life! The characters seem mentally stuck there, if not physically.
