Review of Eagle vs Shark (2007) by Zac M — 14 Apr 2009
A New Zealand take on the odd comedic aspects that made up "Napoleon Dynamite", with an emphasis on character development and romance. The creative mind of Taika Cohen presents us with the type of comedy we don't see very often and is generally for a niche audience.
Loren Horsley and Jemaine Clement seem pleasantly suited for their performances as Lily and Jerrod ,and they the roles are acted just about as awkwardly as possible. The film revolves around Lily and Jerrod trying find love within their dysfunctional relationship.
This is a much deeper film than the aforementioned "Napoleon Dynamite", and it progresses the story in a more meaningful way with a focus on the development of these quirky characters(this is my opinion of course).
Though a comedy, some of the film's humor could be hit or miss as it may be perceived as a bit too immoral or dark for the average viewer. Oddly enough "Eagle vs. Shark" was able to keep me intrigued with the characters and I was laughing at several of the bad jokes and humor.
It's really hard to recommend this because it is so weird, but if you enjoyed "Napoleon Dynamite" you will most likely be satisfied by the similarity.
