Review of Eagle Eye (2008) by Jonny B — 16 Feb 2012
Eagle Eye is certainly a movie which I would like to describe as both hot and cold. For me though, it edges more into the cold.
How many action and thriller movies have you watched? If you are hugely familiar with the genre then you will see Eagle Eye as being very cliched. Unlike horror's and comedy's action/thriller type films make you open to a whole host of ideas that could keep a film from being too cliched. However, director D.J. Caruso may not have thought this through and in the end, you will see numerous parts of this film and say; 'Hey, where can I remember that from again.'.
Another downside is the revelations behind the mysterious woman's voice who is tormenting Jerry (Shia LaBeouf) and Rachael (Michelle Monaghan). Prior to this point I have to admit this was a very entertaining flick I was witnessing but then came the answers we had been waiting for. In the end I felt shallow because it seemed like a tepid excuse for things to be resolved.
As you may have guessed from my previous paragraph the story revolves around Jerry and Rachael (two random civilians) who are being tormented by a mysterious woman's voice. She orders them to do some sometimes insane actions in order to avoid the consequences. And as I've said, this is where the film is thoroughly entertaining but on-wards from the revelations, it goes from an exhilarating to tepid thriller.
Overall, Eagle Eye does numerous things right. But a lack of originality and a poor second half to the film leaves Eagle Eye down in the dumps.
