Review of Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (2011) by Paul C — 29 Apr 2011
I sincerely wanted this film to at least be fun. Brandon Routh needed something that would help him move past the well played but lackluster Superman film. Unfortunately he chose to do this gigantic pile of poo based on a relatively unknown comic book property from Italy.
How bad can it be, you ask? It's so bad that it automatically vaults to the top of my "worst films of the year" list, and should earn many Razzie awards. It's so awful that this action packed horror comedy nearly put me to sleep...and I never fall asleep at movies. It's so abysmal that the creature makeup looks like it was purchased from the post-finale clearance sale of "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer". It's so craptastic that the best things about the movie are Sam Huntington, who actually played Jimmy Olsen opposite Brandon Routh in Superman Returns, and former WWE superstar Kurt Angle (*shudder*). It's so abominable that they actually spout cliched one-liners like "It's dyin' time, bitch!" as though they were meant to be taken seriously. It's so loathsome that even Brandon Routh and Taye Diggs taking off their shirts only got a "mehhh" out of me.
How this dung heap ever made it to the big screen and wasn't immediately dumped onto DVD is beyond me. This will be in the Wal-Mart $5 bargain bin in no time. I wouldn't even recommend renting it from Netflix or Redbox for a single dollar when it gets there. Wait for it to show up on the SyFy network, and keep the remote in hand to change the channel at the first commercial break. In the meantime go see a worthwhile supernatural film like Insidious or a good horror movie like Scream 4.
