Comedy is said to be the hardest genre to pull off well; to balance comedy with horror is even more remarkable because one must create a sense of dread and fear while inserting quick breaks of humor to ease the tension.

I'm writing this in the hopes that the people behind Dylan Dog: Dead of Night read it and take it into consideration if they ever hope to make a Dylan Dog 2. I'm hoping they don't but if they do make a sequel, it'd at least be nice for them to make one funnier than this film (which wouldn't be hard at all).

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is, to quote the studios that distributed the film, "based on one of the world's most popular comics"; I've never heard of it before. Brandon Routh plays Dylan Dog, a private investigator who used to be a paranormal investigator but quit after an accident.

However, when an old man is killed by what he suspects to be a werewolf, Dylan springs back into action with his unfunny one-liner spitting sidekick Marcus (Sam Worthington). Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is basically a detective film with a horror movie edge as it exists in a world where zombies, werewolves, and vampires walk the streets.

Where is this world you might ask? In New Orleans, of course. This film is home to some of the most atrocious dialogue I've heard this year, for example, after Sam Worthington is killed, Dylan narrates "With all the deaths I'd seen, you'd think this one wouldn't matter but it did, Marcus was my friend".

The performances here are neither menacing nor fun. This film lacks any sort of wit, charm, or suspense, causing it to fail as both a comedy and a horror film. The films one redeeming quality, it's special effects, are hardly impressive and only lend themselves to the idea that the producers knew they didn't have a good screenplay so they just threw money at the project in the hopes it'd at least look good.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is dead upon arrival; skip this turkey and watch Shaun of the Dead if you want a good mix of comedy and horror.
