Review of Dying Breed (2008) by ?۩ Iñvért Ð — 11 Apr 2009
I have to say that Dying Breed was one of the better After Dark films this year. It's about a group of people, including Leigh Wannell (whose been relatively low key since his co-lead role in SAW) and Nathan Phillips (a great Australian actor whose also been in Wolf Creek and Snakes on a Plane) going deep into the Tasmanian forest in search of an elusive Tasmanian tiger.
The leader of the group, played by Mirrah Foulkes, is also searching for some resolution regarding her dead sister, whose body was found in that very area several years ago. Within the forest, the small village of Sarah consists of several people whose ancestors were convicts of Tasmania, namely the infamous Alexander Pearce who was known to engage in cannibalism.
Naturally, a few of his lineage are still around and still practicing his cannibalistic ways, which spells trouble for the 4 people. Whannell and Phillips are fun to watch, as are the two female leads, and the film in general is a fun watch.
It handles the whole inbred family eating people deep in the woods scenario and gives it an interesting spin. Great, bleak ending too, which has been a common trend amongst this year's After Dark films (minus Butterfly Effect 3).
This is definitely worth a watch.
