Review of Dying Breed (2008) by Jure K — 02 Jun 2009
This is a unremarkable example of the genera.
This film suffer from, among other things, a fundamental misunderstanding of the concept of a penal colony. The opening scene depicts some unfortunate attempting to 'escape' from the British penal colony in Australia by slogging through the woods.
At any rate, the film shows promise early on. The relationship between the two women protagonists is better developed and more prominently featured than the relationship between either woman and her boyfriend. The boyfriends are shown to be ineffectual and dangerously self-absorbed, respectively. I thought for sure it would come down to the women scampering through the woods dealing with a male-dominated world that is in turns unsympathetic and hostile.
But that's not what happens at all. The plot is completely predictable and uninspired. The film makers tack on some gibberish about the Irish diaspora in an unconvincing effort to add some focus to the story line.
The film holds no surprises for anyone who has seen a slasher flick before; there are better introductions for those that haven't.
