Review of Dutch (1991) by Brad S — 09 Jul 2013
It's disappointing that this film did so poorly at the box office. The 14% critics' rating versus the 60% audience rating is proof that this film has an enormous amount of redeeming qualities. Ed O'Neill does what he does best - playing the grunt - and I find myself cheering for him the entire way.
The few instances that show that he does have some bumbling lovable-idiot qualities (the fireworks, the cot, the slips and falls) only made me like him more. This movie gives you what you expect and, if you've ever dealt with a bratty snot-nosed kid that wasn't yours, it gives you something to relate to.
Some critics panned this film as "formulaic" but I don't think that's always a bad thing. Here's hoping that this film, over time, gets a better rap than it has.
