Review of Duplicity (2009) by Graham F — 12 Apr 2011
Tony Gilroy's uber-blandly named Duplicity is a light and fun caper film, with natural perfomances by Julia Roberts and Clive Owen (who's doing his best to channel the charm of George Clooney. In fact, the Owen role feels like it was written for Clooney).
The film has lots of clever twists and turns, and it's always fun to watch Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti chew the scenery in small roles. Unfortunately, the film runs about 20 minutes too long, and the final "ta-dah!" leaves more "huhs?" and "c'mons!" than satisfaction.
However, with this and his debut feature Michael Clayton, writer/director Gilroy has established himself as a more accessable Soderbergh type, who is able to make smart, well-constructed Hollywood entertainment.
