Review of Duplicity (2009) by Beatrice O — 16 Sep 2011
The execution is not slick enough to make the ever-switching story truly work, resulting in a narrative that seems muddled if still quite enjoyable. I was genuinely interested in where the story was going throughout the film, but felt that the final act was a little underwhelming.
There are predictably strong performances from both Wilkinson and Giamatti, both of whom receive too little screen time. One of the key failures of the film is the complete lack of chemistry between Owen and Roberts - individually they give satisfactory performances, but the scenes which they share quickly fizzle out, becoming flat and devoid of emotion.
Ultimately quite entertaining, but unavoidably flawed and never becoming anything memorable.
