Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Raisa R — 30 Dec 2017
I have always waited to see a day where Nolan would direct a war movie. My verdict is "I smell Oscars coming". This isn't a usually war movie that we have seen before but this is Nolan as he always does the unstoppable. He didn't make a movie that focused on the characters or developing the characters. He focused on the importance and struggle of the war. He defines the realism of war, the brutality, the struggle...He showed what war really meant without having to put any fancy character development and just made us watch for ourselves. The movie was just visually beautiful, which is sorta ironic to say as this is a war movie. Seeing it in IMAX, you can see the beauty of the landscape, yet the struggle of war on the beach. I like that Nolan didn't focus on the characters because it just what war is about. People don't know the names of the soldier who live or die. This movie was about survival and having to go through obstacles. In addition, the cinematography was just beautiful and so clear. I can say without a doubt the movie has to win Best Cinematography. I have never see such views of the beach like that way I saw with Dunkirk. Also, the sound was so loud but it makes sense because bullets and bombs aren't soft. It gives you the war experience. Also, I have to say despite the little dialogue, the acting was great by the actors especially by Harry Styles. He ain't a bad actor. However, I couldn't go on with this review without mentioning Hans Zimmer. He once again managed to fit the right score to the scenes with the movie intense soundtrack that I had goosebumps and started shaking at times because of the suspense. This is definitely one of the best war movies that I have seen my whole life since Saving Private Ryan. This also will rank as one of the best movies I saw this year and should be a must Oscar contender. Definitely worth the watch and watch it in IMAX if you want to see the scenes in the most beautiful way possible.
UPDATE: Just viewed it the 2nd time and It was even more emotional than my first viewing. Just realized a few things this time that truly made this movie so powerful. I loved it even more than the first time.
