Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Shawn S — 22 Jan 2018
Dunkirk was overwhelmingly underwhelming. The soldier attempting to defaecate at the beginning, sets the tone for what follows. In a world of CGI movies, little was done to bring audiences into 1940. Modern buildings shown n their current look are a major distraction, as are the modern ships.
There were something like 400,000 men on Dunkirks beaches and in the town, but we only see a thousand men at best. The beaches should be littered everywhere with equipment, but they aren't. There should be bomb craters everywhere, but its a flat smooth beach.
In fact, it appears the British Army are on holiday. Lots of standing around doing nothing. The scene with the beached fishing boat is an absolute bore, and what person in their right mind would willingly choose to be trapped in a steel box on a beach during a war? It's so bad, that you don't even notice that the second of the two protagonists never speaks.
Nolan tries to use music to bring drama to scenes that aren't dramatic. I was extremely disappointed over this movie after all the hype. It should have been a massive war movie, and instead was a walk on the beach.
And to add insult to injury, the movie, of something so grand as Dunkirk, is 106 minutes long. Yes, 106. You can tell this movie came in well under budget. Dunkirk is an embarrassment for Christopher Nolan, and to the British people.
