A huge fan of many of Christopher Nolan's movies, walking out of the theater this evening left me feeling only one thing. Confused.

This movie was bad. I truly cannot understand how Dunkirk received such high accolades.

The only notion which really saved Dunkirk was the general public interest in the WWII time frame and the political feat of this escape. Dunkirk offered no real plot or direction besides the outcome that is known history. Character development was extremely limited. It's almost as if Nolan chose this way on purpose because he did not want viewers to connect to any of these characters on any level. This movie explained nothing of the actual Dunkirk event and failed to capture me in almost every way. It left me anxious and distracted, not knowing how to feel about the movie in a large, more general sense. The consistent, busy scenes which lasted from start to finish in Dunkirk offered a shallow, hollow attempt that this movie was exciting and thrilling. Rather, this was a noisy, fast movie with no real identity that piggy backed off this historical event.
