Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Andrew K — 03 Sep 2017
I haven't seen a more obtuse, muddled film in years. Unless you have a keen understanding of WWII history (or you're an American), you enter the action completely disoriented, and mot much shakes that off as you spin dizzily between day and night in what seems to be the same time period.
Then you think back to the beginning, when three times periods with intentional misdirection (or is it?) appear on-screen, which alone made little sense, but kind of dawns on you about 2/3 through the film, if you can make it that long.
Is the mole a mute? Is he really a mole? Or is the mole really a jetty? Who knew? I gave up with 30 minutes remaining, not really interested if any of these answers would reveal themselves at all.
