Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Late R — 23 Jun 2018
God, this is a beautifully shot film: wonderfully directed with striking cinematography. 'Dunkirk' presents a part of the WWII story that is not often told: that of soldiers who are desperate to get back home, thinking of nothing else but removing themselves and their brothers-in-arms from harm's way.
Nolan, along with an amazing score from Hans Zimmer, manages to create a ridiculously tense atmosphere, doing his very best to put the audience in these young lads' shoes and give us a sense of the terror they must have felt, death awaiting them in every sound, shadow in the sky and ripple in the water.
To make it even more astounding, he manages to do all of this with a surprisingly scarce amount of dialogue. This is a very different war film and, without a doubt, not as exciting or as action-packed as something like 'Saving Private Ryan', a fact that could serve as a disappointment for a lot of people.
Nevertheless, it is stirring in its own, unique way.
