Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Reece L — 11 Aug 2017
After 3 years of no Christopher Nolan movies, we were given Dunkirk, a historical movie. Most people in the theater didn't know what this movie was about, and didn't understand who was on who's side. The people next to me in the theater were asking lots of questions. Lots of people also didn't like it because of that. They couldn't see through to what Nolan was doing. Trust me, this movie is great.
So this movie is by Christopher Nolan, and it's another piece that solidifies him as one of the best directors out there. It's beautifully shot and captures the war epic feel it should have. One example of how well the feel of this movie was captured was this part at the very beginning of the movie where there's a bombing, and there's just this eerie silence before it. The music is also something I found interesting, because it's not always music. Sometimes it's just sounds repeated over and over again getting faster and louder, and it does a lot for the feel of the movie. And this movie is very intense. The narrative is also interesting. It doesn't give a lot of it's characters names, and some found it hard to understand who was who, and found it a problem with the movie. This wasn't a problem at all. It was easy to understand what was going on. It was just a very well crafted movie with it's directing and storytelling.
The performances are also great. The main actor, Fionn Whitehead is great in the central role, as well as other actors in this movie. All of them are kind of nameless and some people found it hard to tell them apart, but for me this was only a plus. It doesn't need to pick apart each character. It's just a war epic with soldiers who are all fighting for one thing. As far as casting Harry Styles, this didn't seem like a Nolan move for me, especially for this movie. Nonetheless, he actually does great in this movie. I was surprised by how well he acted.
Overall, if you are a person who has a basic understanding for masterful, brilliant film making and can see through the fact that this movie doesn't dumb itself down for you, this movie is phenomenal. Christopher Nolan's directing is amazing and does so much for the feel of this war epic. The performances are great and the storytelling is in it's finest form, making this return for Christopher Nolan one of the best war movies of all time. Dunkirk is a truly epic war experience from start to finish, and is definitely worth seeing.
