Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Evan S — 04 Aug 2017
Dunkirk, as a movie, really wants to do justice to the evacuation of 300,000 Allied soldiers during World War 2. Instead, with no introduction it roars headlong into a mashup of three characters experiences of the event.
The film totally fails to capture the scale of the evacuation as you only see a few hundred soldiers on the beach, and a few RAF aircraft in the sky. From a visceral standpoint the movie works, capturing the desperation of the moment.
But Dunkirk truly fails to tell the story of this pivotal moment in WW2, and that's a missed opportunity. If you had no idea of this event from 1940, you'd have little more understanding of it after watching this movie.
Being shot in IMAX the cinematography is excellent and it was entertaining in that regard. Nonetheless I would have preferred to see the movie explain more of how Dunkirk happened, and what impact it had in WW2.
