Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Lewis C — 28 Jan 2018
Dunkirk is one of Nolan's finest movies yet and the greatest war movie of all time! The opening sequence features a group of soldiers in the town of Dunkirk and instantly the audience is taken right into action.
The movie is solely about the evacuation and the troubles it took to rescue 338,000 Allies soldiers from the shores of northern France. The story is told from three perspectives and time periods, the mole (one week), the sea (one day), and the air (one hour).
Each of these sequences is perfectly shot with Hans Zimmer's score adding suspense of every scene. The acting is also top notch with Fionn Whitehead leading the way at the mole. Tom Hardy is amazing as Farrier, Mark Rylance shines as Mr.
Dawson on the sea, and Kenneth Branagh is effective as Commander Bolton. Those are only the big names, with the rest of the cast putting in strong performances. The timing of the three storylines may confuse some members of the audience, with events happening in the air early on being seen again later on from the sea and mole.
However, it all comes together and is a minor issue that takes little away from the film. There are some heroic moments of the film, with Tom Hardy's Farrier sacrificing himself in order to take out last bomber.
There are also depressing moments showing how dire the situation was for Allied troops and citizens. Although the rescue is seen as a miracle and happy event, it was a major defeat for the Allied troops but also a major turning point in the course of the war.
Overall, Christopher Nolan has produced an epic masterpiece, with Dunkirk being one of the greatest films since "The Dark Knight" all the way back in 2008!
