Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Ash F — 02 Aug 2017
Saw Dunkirk on XD.
Anyone who thinks it's flattened out, no names, too much action... is asking for something that is NOT war, have not seen war especially up close or personal.
The film is visceral, effective in conveying exactly what was happening on the ground! I actually am pleased with less talk. Talk is highly intrusive and ineffectual when your life is constantly in the line of fire.
Near death experiences slam into you one after another. There is no respite. Recorded real life accounts of the evacuees were even more harrowing. One thing that soldiers be it on the ground or in the air know before going for armed action is that they may not come back. There are so many instances where without saying a single word, you're right there with that person, thinking it, "do I give it up now, or keep fighting." To provoke that emotion without any spoken words- that's brilliant.
Well done, Nolan!
