Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Mihai V — 28 Jul 2017
Nolan is a master and he proves it again with Dunkirk. To redefine the war genre so overspent in the commercial arena and do it with such control and power is beautiful. I felt the agony, the joy, the fear and the quest - all in characters I know nothing about apart from the fact that they are fighting for the right side in history.
It challenges the very notion of backstories. Without showing a single fave from the enemy's side, it showed how irrelevant the humanisation of the enemy can be. The mood and the atmosphere was completely immersive.
The shifting timeline was handled with ease. I've always been vocal about how dialogues and plot matter to me, but here there hardly too much of either and yet I was spellbound. I am awe in not just the movie, but the imagination and implementation of the craft of movie making.
