Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Ryan H — 02 Aug 2017
I do not get what the hype is over this movie. Don't get me wrong, it is a decent film, but I do not believe it is anything special. Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates, Downfall, and Inglourious Basterds are far more engaging and tell a better war story.
One of the issues I have with the film is that it is intense from start to finish, never allowing the audience a real breather, to the point where it becomes fatiguing. As a result, I often found my thoughts wandering rather than staying focused on the film.
A good film should always hold the attention and interest of its audience, and keep the audience's focus on the film from start to finish - this film fails to do that.
Another issue I have is towards the very end of the film. Without giving anything away, the sequence of events with the plane comes across as implausible. Up until this sequence of events, Christopher Nolan and co. had done a good job with the bridging shots/composition/whatever-the-proper-term-is...but with this scene it just seems to fall apart and hurts the immersion.
