Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Natalie M — 24 Jul 2017
Dunkirk was unlike any other war movie. It didn't just tell the story of what happened on the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940, but it allowed you to experience what it was like for the 400,000 men stranded there.
This movie succeeds in providing the viewer with a unique movie going experience, making it a refreshing take on the film experience. Christopher Nolan, again, shows his ability to not only construct a good, captivating story, but also provide a masterfully beautiful visual experience.
His use of editing and various gorgeous shots causes you to feel as though you are on the shores of Dunkirk, on a plane, or trapped in a sinking boat, causing you to experience the claustrophobia and anxiety those veterans experienced during that frightful time.
The acting, from a highly qualified cast, enhances the experience even more. Mark Rylance's performance is both simple and impactful. Tom Hardy's heroic and gripping, Cillian Murphy's heartbreaking and sincere.
This movie is both a visual experience, an emotional roller coaster, and a excellent war film.
