Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Isadore H — 25 Jul 2017
This wasn't the best movie I saw from Christopher Nolan, but I really enjoyed it still, it was easily the best filmed movie I saw so far this year, the use of the calm sea contrasting with the violent, incredibly tense battle scenes on land was excellent.
I also thought it had the best action Nolan ever filmed, and I am very excited to see how he will keep improving his action scenes from here. My main problem with the film is that there was not enough character development to make me care about the perilous situations the characters were trapped in, and Mark Rylance's character was the best realized, but he even still was very underwritten as a character.
However, when you take into consideration the fact that this film was only about an event, and nothing else, it was about as good as it could have been. I saw a YouTube review on this film before I watched it and I'm going to steal a little bit of what he said.
To summarize, it was essentially this; if you're making a film about a real life event that took place and if you're trying to depict it as real as possible, having a scene where the main characters sit around a campfire or a dinner table and talk about who they have back home would just feel out of place because nobody would be doing that in that situation, not when they're all trying to simply stay alive in front of great odds.
I agree mostly with this statement, but I still would have liked to see better written characters, however in the end, it was still a suspenseful film filled with excellent action scenes, a very solid ending, and some of the best filmed scenes I've seen all year.
4/5 stars.
